这块“树皮”巧克力,一碰舌尖就化

MATTE Bottega del Cioccolato opened its shop in Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills Garden Plaza in February 2024. It soon became famous all over Japan for making the world’s thinnest chocolate, named Corteccia, which means tree bark in Italian. This special chocolate is only 0.03 millimeters thick, and making such thin chocolate is really a hard task.

Corteccia gets its idea from traditional Italian layered chocolate. To make it, the shop worked with a local machine expert for one and a half years and created a special rolling machine. No other machines in the world can press chocolate into such an ultra-thin sheet. Workers roll the thin chocolate into twig-like shapes (树枝状) with rough bark surfaces.

You may wonder why people need such thin chocolate. The shop’s founder Matteo Sanclicca had a clear goal. He wanted chocolate that melts the second it touches your tongue. Food lovers agree that chocolate tastes best when it melts softly in the mouth, and Corteccia fully brings this wonderful feeling to every customer.

After photos of Corteccia spread rapidly on social media, many chocolate makers tried to copy it. However, none of them succeeded. The special rolling machine is one-of-a-kind and only sits in MATTE’s Tokyo workshop.

Today, crowds of visitors line up to try this amazing chocolate. It is not just a sweet snack but also a perfect mix of creative ideas and special technology. People are always surprised by its light, smooth taste that melts away on the tongue.
