Before 2020, Zachery Dereniowski of Ontario, Canada was studying medicine at the University of Sydney in Australia. After having a health problem and feeling nervous about his studies, he fell into a deep depression(抑郁).
Zachery felt very lonely during that time, so he decided to do something. With the help of his friend Patrick Glaz, Zachery hit the streets of Sydney to make a video about showing kindness.
In his first video, Zachery stood in a public space and was blindfolded(被蒙上眼睛的), as he held a sign that read “If you have depression, hug me.” Total strangers did that, coming close to Zachery and sharing a hug. The video became popular online. Later, Zachery and Patrick hit the streets to start their social experiments in kindness more often. He also asks strangers to help, like borrowing a few dollars. The first person to help him gets a $500 reward.
It’s incredibly beautiful and satisfying to see these scenes play out. People who agree to help Zachery are always so grateful. Often, they share a bit about their lives that makes it clear how much they themselves needed help but would never think to ask a stranger for it.
What a strong influence Zachery is having on strangers around the world, and we can’t thank him enough!
