The traditional Chinese solar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. End of Heat, the 14th solar term of the year, begins this year on Aug 23 and ends on Sept 6. The following are some things you should know about End of Heat.
Enjoying coolness
Most areas across China will cool down during the period of time starting with “the End of Heat”. The weather during this period of time is noted by the large temperature swings between days and nights, so carrying an additional coat is necessary. But in some areas, especially in South China, autumn is late in coming and people are still bothered by hot weather.
The Fishing Season Festival
For Chinese fishermen, the period of the End of Heat is a harvest season. During this period, the Fishing Season Festival is held in regions along the coastline of the East China Sea in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Fujian provinces. For the fishermen living in the coastal areas of China, the fishing ban usually ends by this time of year, and great celebrations would be held to see off the fishermen sailing to sea.
Autumn weariness
__________ As the human body would gradually fit a cooler season, people are easily getting tired during the season. Chinese people often call it the “autumn weariness”. It is a sign that the human body needs rest, because people have consumed a lot of energy in the summer. Get enough sleep, do more exercises and keep plants indoors to help.
Eating duck
Chinese traditional medicine says that different foods have a cooling (yin) or warming (yang) effect on the body. According to these beliefs, autumn is a good time to clear excess(过量) heat from our bodies. This is why Chinese people like to eat cooling food at this time of year. Duck meat is said to be a cooling (yin) food, so the duck meat is a must on the menu of “the End of Heat”.
