慢下来!成都三天全员核酸,居民原则居家

The southwestern China city of Chengdu has been locked down after an increase in COVID-19 cases.

More than 21 million people have been ordered to stay at home from 6 p.m. local time on Thursday as part of the city’s measure. Chengdu’s residents will all be tested over the coming days. While students in this city can’t go to school at the planned or expected time, public transportation is still operating. About 70% of the flights(航班) to and from Chengdu have been suspended. Residents are permitted to leave Chengdu, the capital of the south-west Sichuan province, if they can show a special need. At the same time, just one member of each family who can show a negative(阴性的) virus test within the past 24 hours is allowed outside each day to buy food and other things that they need in order to live.

Chengdu has reported around 1,000 cases in the latest outbreak, with no deaths. On Thursday, the city recorded 157 new infections(感染), including 51 showing no signs of the disease. The lockdown is the largest since the city of Shanghai was locked down for months. Other restrictions are now in force elsewhere in China, including in Shenzhen in the south and Dalian in the north-east.

China says the measures are necessary to prevent a wider spread of the virus. The fear of being caught in a lockdown situation or sent to a quarantine facility for even being close to a person who has COVID-19 has an influence on people’s work, study and travel habits.
