When Fred Everitt, 68, took a cat home from the Humane Society four years ago, he thought he was saving her life. But last week, she may have saved his. Bandit, the cat, lives with Everitt. When a couple of would-be robbers(盗贼) tried to break into their home, the cat did everything she could to tell her owner of the danger.
“You hear of guard(警卫) dogs. This is a guard cat,” Everitt said. The robbery happened sometime between 2:30 and 3 a.m. on July 25, 2022, Everitt said. At first, he woke up after he heard Bandit’s meows(猫叫声) in the kitchen. Then, the cat raced into the bedroom, jumped onto the bed and began getting the comforter(盖被) off of him and clawing at his arms. Everitt knew something was wrong. “She had never done that before,” Everitt said.
Everitt got up to see what happened. He turned on the lights and saw two young men outside his back door. One had a gun, and the other was using a tool to try and make the door open. Everitt said by the time he found his gun and returned to the kitchen, the would-be robbers had already run away. He said the situation could have been different without Bandit.
“It did not turn into a terrible situation, thank goodness,” Everitt said. “But I think it’s only because of the cat.”
