Jonathan is a tortoise. He is 190 years old in 2022. He is the oldest living land animal in the world. He lives on the island of Saint Helena with other three tortoises: 54-year-old Emma, 54-year-old David, and 31-year-old Frederika.

In 1882, Jonathan arrived here as a gift to the island. He was thought to be aged about 50 years old at that time. He has not grown any bigger since then. But some people believe he could be older. They are right. Jonathan has just had his 190th birthday.

Though he has lived a long life, he didn’t get any attention until 2008 when the newspaper The Independent reported on his then age of 176.

Scientists have studied Jonathan. They hope to find something to fight cancer in humans.
