On December 22, the China Media Group released its official logo(标志) and mascot(吉祥物), “Tu Yuanyuan” (literally round bunny) for the 2023 Spring Festival Gala, under the theme of “A more prosperous life in a thriving(旺盛的) China in the new era”.
The Year of the Rabbit is just around the corner, with Chinese New Year arriving on January 22 in 2023. At precisely 8 p.m. on Lunar New Year’s Eve in practically every Chinese household, families get together in front of TV, watching performances such as dance and operas. The Spring Festival Gala, hosted by China Media Group (CMG), known as “Chunwan” in Chinese, has become an indispensable part of the Chinese Lunar New Year celebration since 1983. The 2023 Spring Festival Gala will air on Spring Festival Eve, which falls on January 21.
After gathering countless audiences’ favorite options and through systematic and informative big data research, the 2023 Spring Festival Gala official logo and mascot image, “Tu Yuanyuan”, was born. It is the first intellectual property mascot generated through big data analysis in the 40-year history of the Spring Festival Gala.
The mascot “Tu Yuanyuan” shows the aesthetics(美学) and meaning of the traditional Chinese zodiac sign rabbit. The image is inspired by the earliest rabbit-shaped animal found in the world so far, and creatively presents the scientific research achievements in China. The design of the mascot “Tu Yuanyuan” was completed in four months by Chen Xiangbo, the director and chief curator of Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen, and the visual design team of the Spring Festival Gala. The overall image is based on the characteristics of the Chinese white rabbit, incorporates(吸收) the aesthetic style of gongbi, a careful realist technique in Chinese painting, and is completed using 3D modeling technology.
