Zhang Mengzhen is from Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province. She is a short video blogger(博主) who is known as “Working Girl Little Zhang”.

These days, she is popular on Douyin for offering useful advice on living in the city. One million people follow her in a month for the “How to...” video series. The series includes information on basic social situations, such as how to take the subway, visit the doctor alone, and place orders at McDonald’s or Starbucks. Many people like her videos. One Douyin user wrote, “You really have helped a quiet, shy person like me who is also short of life experience!”

“Not everyone was born and grew up in big cities with high-speed railways and planes. I hope to share some experience for those who are new to the life in the city,” Zhang said. “My videos might not cover everything, what I try to say is that don’t be afraid to face anything you haven’t been exposed to(接触).”

These videos focus on young people’s “fear of showing shyness” as they make their way into society. The National Bureau of Statistics says that China has a floating(流动的) population of about 376 million people, most of whom move from the countryside to cities. Zhang’s growing popularity is largely attributed to(归因于) the fast spread of the Internet in the countryside.
