The US Coast Guard were surprised to come across a lone American as their boat was breaking ice on Lake St Clair. The American said he started to walk three days ago, and he tried to get from Detroit to Toronto. He said he slept in a lighthouse on Wednesday night.
The Coast Guard said the 25-year-old American, in usual clothing, was in low temperature. They quickly took him to hospital in Algonac, Michigan.
US Coast Guard Lt Josh Zike said the man had a backpack with food, clothes and a sleeping bag, but no phones with him. He could fall into the lake because some of the ice could break easily.
It was the first save in four years by one of the Great Lakes ice-cutter boats, the boats clear the waterway for commercial shipping.
