When & Where
La Tomatina occurs on the last Wednesday of August. In 2025, it falls on August 27th. Though the tomato fight is iconic, it’s part of a week-long festival honoring the town’s patron saint, San Luis Beltrán. The battle begins around 11 a.m., but arrive early to witness the “palo jabón”—a greasy pole with a ham atop, where climbers compete before the chaos. The official start of the fight has to wait until someone manages to climb it.
Getting Tickets
Entry now requires advance tickets for safety. Limited spots sell out yearly, so book early via the official website or certified tour operators. Basic tickets start at €12, while packages often include transport from Valencia, plus extras like paella, sangria, or festival T-shirts.
Event Schedule
9:00 a.m.: Crowds gather in Plaza del Pueblo.
10:00 a.m.: “Palo jabón” contest begins.
11:00 a.m.: A water cannon signals the start! Tomato trucks roll in.
11:00–12:00: One hour of joyful tomato throwing.
12:00 p.m.: A second cannon marks the immediate stop.
1:00 p.m.: Fire trucks clean the streets.

Squash (压碎) tomatoes before throwing.
Avoid hard objects (bags/bottles).
Stay clear of moving trucks.
Wear disposable clothes and sturdy shoes (no sandals!).
Goggles prevent eye stinging.

Travel & History
Most visitors stay in Valencia. Book tour buses (easiest option) or take crowded local trains. Driving is discouraged due to road closures.
La Tomatina began accidentally in 1945 when youths threw tomatoes during a parade. Though banned for years, locals kept the tradition alive. Today, it’s an official “Festival of International Tourist Interest”, drawing global participants.
