The European Commission has officially announced that new transparency rules under Article 50 of the AI Act are now in effect across the European Union as of August 2. All organizations and businesses offering AI services or publishing AI-generated content in the EU must clearly label it. Violators could face fines of up to €15 million.

In newly released implementation guidelines, the Commission stated that the core purpose of these requirements is to build public trust and protect the integrity of online content. “Users have the right to know when they are interacting with AI or viewing AI-generated material,” the guidelines read. “This helps people make more informed decisions, properly adjust their trust in AI, reduce the spread of false information, and avoid being fooled by misleading AI-created content.”
